Daylight Saving debate won’t go away
The daylight saving debate has reared its head again in Queensland, with the possibility that a referendum might be held next year on whether or not to adopt it, at least in the south-east corner of the state. It’s curious that we might get a referendum on this, but people don’t get a say on whether or not they want their local government authority amalgamated with other ones.
I’ve posted on daylight saving a couple of times before – here and here. I’m one of the minority in south-east Queensland who don’t like daylight saving, probably mostly because I prefer the dark to the sunlight (sunlight gives you cancer after all). But one benefit of adopting daylight saving is that we wouldn’t have to endure the perennial daylight saving debate anymore. I’m sure the promoters of it will keep bashing away forever until they get it, and they’ve almost worn me down, so I might even vote for it this time around if it means they’ll shut up and go away.
The Courier-Mail has it as a topic on one of their blogs. Last time they did that, it drew around 200 responses. It’s interesting, and pleasing, to see that consideration is being given to whether daylight saving would led to greater or lesser energy consumption as a consequence – something which would be useful to establish regardless of whether you like a later sunset or not.
UPDATE: (1/7) Brisbane’s Sunday Mail newspaper reports on a poll (of only 504 voters across the state) which found that only 27 per cent of Queenslanders favour daylight saving just for the south-east corner of the state.

Always look on the bright side of life…..Senator you could lead the way and become a Breatherian,a bite on a grape, a smell of a potato chip,a flick of wine from your small pinkie as they do here in N.S.W. to stop young men from wasting expensive tyres.[In adverts at least] Yep! A breatherian revolution, plus daylight saving, and that will mean all the dogs and cat in your area will have happy owners, because they will have enough time to wait for the traffic to pass and then exercise rover and pick up some cat din dins on the way home.

Perhaps this site here will calm those fears about daylight savings. Here’s a snippet:
You’ll have to read the site to find out…

Andrew – I now how much you like daylight saving jokes – I’m sure you didn’t mean to imply that there would be more sunlight…..just that you would prefer to spend less time in it!!

As Ken has suggested daylight saving doesn’t mean extra hours of sunshine. The only thing that changes is the clock. Ergo, no increase in skin cancer or faded curtains.
Historically the reason for adopting daylight saving is to conserve energy. Surely we need that now more than ever.
It must be said though that there is little to be gained from daylight saving in tropical areas.

the QLD gov should just it it & stop stuffing around. i mean beattie can be very demo when it comes to minor issues & very un-demo’ when it comes to the really important stuff e.g., education, health or finance.
there ARE huge problems in these areas – i have given a COMPLETE frame work to get the job done. so get off u butt beattie & MAKE the crucial changes!
u got a lot of fat-cats sitting on their fat butts, uttering meaning-LESS slogans, while kids get killed via an in-ert set of USEless ideas, of no practical use what ever.
when are pollies going to SHOW a bit of courage?
our education systems are ROTTEN from top to bottom, starting with teacher ‘training’. education gurus are an absolute waste of time.
of course, teachers, gurus & and fat cats will protest BASED on past errors that they refuse to accept [to much guilt].
i have written HOW & what should be done, at a GLOBAL level.
so, beattie and other pollies, get u act together.

If I wanted the choice of having daylight saving, I’d move to frigging VICTORIA!!! For all you victorians who have moved up to Queensland, please don’t make it into another Victoria. It’d be nice to have a bit of diversity in this country…….REALLY

for ppl who actually work outside i.e..builders earthmovers tiptruck drivers
daylight saving means that they work extra hours because they normally work mostly daylight hours .what happened here in the west last year was that most truck drivers started in the dark and worked extra hours as they work untill dark normally.
the question is to all those office johnnys that want to get home early to get out of the heat what do you think about having to drive on the roads that have truck drivers that have bean on the road working for 12 to 15 hours a day instead of the normal 8 to 10 hours.
daylight saving is all about the money nothing to do with quallity of life.
