Bartlett backs start of ‘Don’t Murray the Mary’ kayak trip tomorrow

Queensland Senator Andrew Bartlett is welcoming the kayak trip along the threatened Mary River being undertaken by Steve Posselt to draw attention to the major damage that will be caused by the Labor government’s Traveston Dam.

Senator Bartlett will be attending the start of Steve Posselt’s kayak trip tomorrow morning in Brisbane. Mr Posselt will be paddling up the Brisbane Rover, hiking to the upper catchment of the Mary River, kayaking down the Mary and back down the coast to the Brisbane River.

He has previously kayaked from Brisbane to Adelaide to raise awareness of the damage being done to the Murray River.

“It is indisputable that the dam will cause massive harm to the Mary River, both upstream and at the mouth of the river,” Senator Bartlett said.

“The state government is still just relying on spin, misinformation, intimidation and creating a false sense of inevitability to push through this expensive, destructive and unnecessary dam.”

“The onus now is on the federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett to use the powers he has under federal environment laws to stop this unnecessary damage.”

“Apart from all the other damage to wetlands, threatened species and water quality into the World Heritage listed Great Sandy Straits, allowing the dam to go ahead will lock in massive long-term greenhouse emission.”

“There are other alternatives to the dam which are cheaper and less destructive.”

“Even if you use desalination as a last resort, it would be less energy intensive, less expensive and less destructive than a dam, without having to hope it rains in the right place in the right amount.”

“This will be a much bigger test of the environmental credentials of Peter Garrett than the pulp mill. If he won’t use the powers to stop something that is so obviously destructive of matters of national environmental significance, then there is little hope there will ever be strong action taken when it matters to protect our environment from bone-headed decisions.
