Bartlett comment on final Queensland Senate count

Queensland Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett has formally congratulated Labor Senator elect Mark Furner on winning the Democrat Senate seat following the final distribution of preferences by the Australian Electoral Commission today.

"This result marks the end of an era," Senator Bartlett said.

"Queenslanders have had a Democrat representative in the Senate since 1981, and this election result means an end – for now at least – to any non-major party representation and voice for Queenslanders in the new Senate.

"It also means that Queenslanders will have no voice in most future balance of power situations.

"My term does not expire until 30 June 2008 and I will continue to work hard to represent Queensland through advocacy and as a legislator," Senator Bartlett said.

Senator Bartlett will be attending the formal Declaration of the Poll for the 2007 Queensland Senate election tomorrow and will be making a further statement at that time.

Declaration details:

Time: 10.00 am, Friday 14th December

Venue: Caribbean Room,
Level 1, Christie Corporate Centre
320 Adelaide Street
Brisbane City.
