Australian Democrats’ spokesperson for Defence, Senator Andrew Bartlett today repeated his call for the Federal Government to set out a timetable for the withdrawal of Australian troops from Iraq.
"In light of statements made today by an Iraqi Government representative, it is clear that an exit strategy should now be put into place," Senator Bartlett said.
"While the Democrats did not support the invasion of Iraq, we repeatedly stated that Australia had an obligation to assist rebuilding and create a secure environment once we were there.
"However, it is now very clear that the time has been reached to start preparing to bring our troops home.
"The Prime Minister may be incapable of admitting his mistake in supporting the invasion of Iraq and mishandling of the post-war situation. The least he can do is show some clear leadership now, rather than wait for instructions from other nations," Senator Bartlett concluded.
