Bartlett helps launch "Hard Labour, Stolen Wages" report
Speaking at the Melbourne launch of Dr Rosalind Kidd’s Hard Labour, Stolen Wages report, Democrat Deputy Leader Senator Andrew Bartlett acknowledged the important work that has been built on Dr Kidd’s previous research and the findings of the 2006 unanimous Senate committee report.
"Dr Kidd’s report takes the understanding of the impact of the stolen wages issue one step further," Senator Bartlett said.
"Stolen wages is an area in which Dr Kidd has over a decade of research experience and her original research was ground breaking. Following from this the Democrat initiated Senate Committee into the issue aimed to examine just how widespread the practice was and how the impacts are still being felt today.
"Governments can’t lecture Indigenous organizations about standards of governance when such a monumental misappropriation of wages and fraud perpetrated by those same governments continues to go unaddressed.
"The Democrats will continue to push for proper compensation and recognition for those affected by stolen and underpaid wages.
"Stolen wages is a key area of unfinished business which stands in the way of full equality for Indigenous Australians, and it is an area which only governments, state and federal, can fix," Senator Bartlett concluded.
Today’s launch is being held at: 10.30am, Koori Hertiage Trust, 295 King St, Melbourne.
Senator Bartlett will also be assisting with the Brisbane launch of Hard Labour, Stolen Wages next week on Wednesday 5th September.
